The causes, roughly in order of likelihood
1. The profile is not verified
An unverified Google Business Profile will not appear in Maps results or the Local Pack at all, regardless of how complete it looks in the dashboard. Verification is usually done by postcard, phone or video, and it is the single most common blocker.
2. The profile is incomplete
A missing category, no service area, no opening hours, or no photos all weaken a profile. Google favours listings it can confidently match to a search — the primary category alone has an outsized effect on which searches a business shows up for.
3. Name, address and phone number are inconsistent
If your business is listed as "Ltd" on one directory and without it on another, or the address is formatted differently in different places, Google can struggle to confirm it is the same business. Small formatting differences — "Street" versus "St" — genuinely matter.
4. Too few reviews, or reviews that have gone quiet
A competitor with forty recent reviews will usually outrank one with twelve old ones for the same search, even with a weaker profile otherwise. Review volume and recency are both significant local ranking factors, not just reputation signals.
5. Duplicate listings
A second, forgotten profile — often created accidentally by a previous employee, an old agency, or a data aggregator — splits reviews and confuses which listing Google should trust. Searching your own business name on Google Maps will usually reveal this quickly.
6. A brand-new profile
New profiles simply take Google some time to build confidence in, even when everything is set up correctly. This is normal and resolves with consistent activity over a few weeks.
How to check which applies to you
- Search your business name in Google Maps and confirm only one listing exists.
- Log into Google Business Profile and check the verification status.
- Compare your listed name, address and phone number against your website and any directory listing (Yell, Thomson Local, Facebook) for exact matches.
- Check the primary category and confirm it matches what a customer would search for.
- Count your reviews and compare against two or three direct local competitors.
